• Attribution of nationality – Original nationality

– to the children of a Portuguese mother or a Portuguese father, born abroad;

– those born abroad, with at least one direct ascendant up until the 2º degree with the Portuguese nationality, who has not lost the nationality;

– those born in Portuguese territory, children of foreigners, if at the time of birth the mother or father was legally residente for at least five years;

– those born in Portugal who prove that they do not have any other nationality;

  • Acquisition of nationality – Derived nationality

– those born abroad, which are minor and their mother or father have obtained the Portuguese nationality after their birth;

– the foreigner who has been married for more than three years to a Portuguese national or has been living in a consensual union for more than three years with a Portuguese national;

– the foreigner who has been Portuguese, who lost his or her nationality as a minor or incapacitated, as a result of the declaration of who represented him;

– the foreigner which is adopted by a portuguese national;

– the foreigners who are major and have been legally resident in Portuguese territory for at least six years;

– the minors born in Portuguese territory, with foreign parents;

– the descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews;

Amendments that will take effect shortly:

  • Original nationality:

– People born in Portuguese territory, children of foreigners who are not in the service of their State, who do not declare not wanting to be Portuguese, provided that at the time of birth one of the parents has been legally resident for at least two years;

  • Nationality derived:

– The adopted by Portuguese national acquires the Portuguese nationality;

– Have been legally resident in Portugal for at least five years;
